Producing Audiobooks for Indie Authors

Hey there!

My name is Antoine of AB Book Services. Los Angeles-based indie author, publisher, and audiobook producer. I have edited over 6 million words of audiobook content over the past few years.

With the rise of audiobooks and indie publishing all around, all of my own personal manuscripts have received the audiobook treatment by yours truly. Now I’m expanding my talents out to other indie authors at flexible prices without sacrificing professional quality.

Though AB Book Services’ primary focus is audiobooks, we also offer other ways to help you, like book formatting, editing, and even podcasts!

“The audio quality of Antoine’s production is unmatched. My readers constantly mention how clear the narrator is in my reviews. Best believe he will be handling all my audiobooks in the future!”

—Kahriq Salil, author of Stoneskin

FLAT RATES

Global Voice Acting Association (GVVA) Rate Guide for standard audiobook work.

As you can see above, industry rates can get quite pricey.

If you choose to produce an audiobook with us, our rate starts at $55/PFH with professional quality.

With us, we pay narrators for time-in-booth, while our engineers take on the editing and finishing process, giving narrators more time to audition, take on gigs, etc, while the engineers slave away over your audio.

I, Antoine, have years of experience editing video and audio for the past decade (five years with audio-only projects), and am quite efficient with my workflow.

All the other engineers I work with are experienced as well.

But don’t take my word for it. Listen to a sample for yourself below.

Or check out our full portfolio by clicking or tapping here.

“As a writer, it's my job to put it all on the page. In some ways that's very difficult, but in others it's rather easy. Got a pen and paper? Got a keyboard? If so, you can write! It's that simple. It takes someone special to breathe life into the words you write though, and I couldn't have asked for a better production company for my audiobook!”

—Matthew Chatman, author of A Servant’s Work and Grace Under Fire

Audio Engineering, Mastering ($10/PFH)*

Are you a narrator, author, or publisher who just needs to make sure your files meet audiobook platform standards?

Then this service is for you.

Single-Narrator (Narrator Rate, see below)

This is the most common of the audiobook types. One manuscript. One narrator.

This version works best for stories with one POV or an author or listener who prefers one voice throughout their narrative experience.

Click or tap here for an example of a single-narrator project.

Duet-Narrators (Contact for Rates)

Rising in popularity, especially among romance subgenres. A highly immersive audio experience.

This version works best for listeners who prefer all specific voices (whether character work or prose) to all be done by a male or female depending on a scene’s context.

For example, a male POV would be in a male’s voice but whenever a female character speaks, a female narrator would take over.

Click or tap here for an example of a duet-narrated project.

Audio Drama (Contact for Rates)

High production quality for audiences desiring a full auditory experience.

Audio dramas are dramatized, purely acoustic performances. With no visual component, audio drama depends on dialogue, music, and sound effects to help the listener imagine the characters and the story.

Add-On: AI Audio Proofing via Pozotron [Highly Recommended] ($35/PFH)

Typically, we do not proof after editing and mastering the audio to save authors money, as indie authors typically like doing the proofing themselves. But we do have the option of using Pozotron, an automated system to help proof audiobooks if you desire something like that. If that sounds good…

Then this version is for you. We’ll clean up your audio and prepare it for audiobook platforms and go through it all a second time with AI proofing to make sure nothing was missed.

Add-On: Pronunciation & Character Guides via Pozotron ($10/FLAT)

In addition, Pozotron offers an extensive pronunciation and character guide. We recommend this for authors who have a lot of uncommon names, such as sci-fi and fantasy works, or those of foreign cultures outside of the United States. Otherwise, this is not necessary for most authors but is still a nice addition.

Add-On: Human Audio Proofing ($50/PFH)

Same service as AI proofing via Pozotron, only the task is undertaken by myself or another human proofer. This can also be paired with AI proofing to ensure the audio is as great as it can be.

Add-On: Live Directing ($50/PFH)

If you would like live direction, one of our engineers or directors will join our narrators in their booths as they work through your manuscript.

Add-On: Dual-Narrators ($5/PFH)

Less common overall, but very popular in the romance genre. One manuscript. Two POVs. Two or more narrators.

This version works best for stories with two POVs, particularly when there is one female and one male perspective.

An additional $5/PFH will be added for each narrator (if you have more than two).

Click or tap here for an example of a dual-narrator project.

Add-On: Opening/Closing Credits Music ($15/FLAT)

Want to start and end your audiobook with some music? For a flat rate, you can have that added on.

All music used is licensed and royalty-free.

Add-On: Musical Interludes ($10/PFH)

Want musical interludes for your audiobook? For an additional cost, you can have that added on.

All music used is licensed and royalty-free.

Add-On: Sound Effect Interludes ($5/PFH)

Want sound effected interludes for your audiobook? For an additional cost, you can have that added on.

All sound effects are licensed and royalty-free.

Add-On: Basic SFX ($5/PFH)

Do you have a lot of phone calls in your story? Maybe a sci-fi helmet or a telepathic wizard. For an additional cost, you can have basic SFX applied to your characters’ voices when the narrative calls for it.

All sound effects are licensed and royalty-free.

Add-On: Full Music ($25/PFH)

Want music throughout your audiobook to heighten your scenes? For an additional cost, you can have that added on.

All music used is licensed and royalty-free.

Add-On: SFX ($35/PFH)

Want sound effects peppered through your audiobook to heighten your scenes? For an additional cost, you can have that added on.

All sound effects used are licensed and royalty-free.

Add-On: Retail Sample Promo ($10/FLAT)

Would you like a full retail sample for your social media with cover art and audio waveforms? For a small flat fee, we’ll add that to your final MP3 files.

For an example, you can click on this link.

Add-On: YouTube Video ($100/FLAT)

This service includes an MP3 file of all the comedic retakes or flubs in a project.

Add-On: Rush Services (Varying Rate/PFH)*

On a tight deadline? If our schedule is full but you need a project done ASAP, we can discuss a rush charge that’s fair for both parties.

Add-On: Revisions (Varying Rate/PFH)*

While editing revisions are generally free of charge, any revisions that require talent to come back into the booth for non-technical reasons will incur additional charges. Said charges will be quoted and agreed upon before going forward (no hidden fees).

*NOTE: Prices vary on your word count. Only when you submit your word count can you get a final quote.

Spencer Banks

$150/PFH (solo/dual) | $90/PFH (duet/drama)

For over 20 years I worked as a professional actor, having secured some wonderful character and comedy roles which I performed on stage and screen. It was towards the latter part of these two decades that I developed my passion for voice acting and narrating. I've worked on local radio stations performing plays (playing Gobbel in 'The Lying Kind' by Anthony Neilson being a particularly enjoyable highlight) and have secured numerous test script reading roles as well as advertisements for radio. I also worked as a hospital radio D.J for two years. Due to my acting career and the character roles I played, my range of accents and styles is extensive, as I've demonstrated in my demo, so reading character roles during audiobook assignments comes naturally to me. I also can adapt my voice to suit various styles and appeal to specific audiences and age demographics. In short, voice acting and narrating is something I fully enjoy and have a genuine passion for.
